Why is Posture so important? Postural misalignment is caused when the muscles in our bodies are over or under worked and not performing to their optimal capacity. This in turn causes functional imbalances which leaves the body susceptible to injury and strain. Overuse of postural muscles of the body can cause the muscles become weak, long, shortened or tight. Consequently extreme activity can also cause muscular imbalances that lead to dysfunction and compensation. Incorrect posture usually leads to gradual changes in muscle, tendon, or fascial support, which in turn are the causes of many musculoskeletal dysfunctions. Always begin with Postural Assessment & Patient Care The foundation of any clinical assessment should begin with an adequate postural assessment. From a healthcare practitioner's point of view, posture misalignment and deviations can be a cause for many musculoskeletal conditions. Identifying the key points of misalignment is one of first steps to providing effective treatments, therapy and home care to patients. Types of Postural Assessment In this course you will learn two main types of Postural Assessments; Static & Dynamic. Static posture assessment you will examine a person’s posture in standing position, observing their posture from different perspectives the front, back and side views, and identifying key landmarks. We learn to examine posture with the use of the plumb line as point of reference of body alignment. In a dynamic posture assessment, you will examine the person's gait, squat and other movement patterns. Day 1: Lateral, Anterior & Posterior View Posture Assessment
